Ssssh, I am on a secret mission as a mystery shopper.  Quite an unusual job this one, I have to surreptitiously insert a 5 inch thermometer into two pints of beer to test the temperature without arousing suspicion of fellow drinkers!  Am I having fun – well actually, yes I am.  Of course not all mystery shops are as unusual as this, I could be going for a meal in a restaurant, visiting new build flats, checking out a food store, IT store;  in fact just about any business which is involved in providing customer service these days tends to look at using mystery shoppers. While it is typically fun and informative, mystery shopping is first and foremost a business.

 

You may be wondering what Mystery Shopping is used for well although the name itself may seem a bit mysterious, the concept of mystery shopping is actually straightforward.  Anonymous shoppers pose as ordinary customers and provide an unbiased evaluation and overall shopping experience of the business based on service, cleanliness, quality and other factors that the client may require.  It provides a way for companies to gather information to improve customer service, training, assess differing market trends, and provides valuable feedback about their business and overall operation.   Mystery Shopping is also a form of research that allows clients to determine if the decisions made in the boardroom are carried out on the sales floors or in the dining rooms of their establishments across the globe.

 

Telephone Mystery Shopping is a useful tool to establish how customers are being dealt with either at store or head office level and is very beneficial when used as a part of training initiatives, or to check on customer service training which has already been implemented.  I have taken part in various telephone mystery shops including renewing a passport, CRB checks which involved asking two or three questions to see how my queries were handled.   Mystery shops can also be conducted using email.

 

So what exactly does mystery shopping involve for the shopper. A Mystery Shopper is sent to an outlet to purchase particular items or observe specific aspects about a company’s product or service offerings then answering specific objective questions. This is normally done via a questionnaire, which will ask you to report on many things, such as the quality of the service you received, the interior appearance of a shop, etc.  Were the products and services explained to you in an easy to understand manner.  Shoppers may also be asked for their personal subjective viewpoint.  The data helps companies to analyse their strengths and weaknesses in the area of customer service.

 

Mystery shopping is a great fun way to earn money.  You will have the flexibility to choose your own days and hours and the best part is you do not need any experience to become a Mystery Shopper.  However, earning an income as a mystery shopper is not getting paid to deceive the company employees, but rather a legitimate job to assess the service quality of a company, and help it grow and prosper.   You can build up your reputation as a reliable Mystery Shopping which may in turn lead to higher paid shopping assignments.  You can feel important doing mystery shopping, because you, together with your fellow mystery shoppers, make a difference in the big world of merchandise and services.  Mystery shoppers sometimes uncover safety or security
